OTAKU is a term use to describe people who are fans of a certain hobby, person, stuff, etc. Being an otaku doesn't relatively means you are an anime fan. They are overly obsess to something.
Otaku is the honorific word "Taku" (home). In Japan, it has an extremely negative
meaning to refer someone who stays at home and have no social life don't forget love life. Though
western countries uses the term otaku as an anime fan.
I considered myself as an otaku, an Anime, Manga and Figure Otaku.
My entry will tell my boring origin of how I become one of those fangirls/ fanboys.
VOLTES V. |
When I was in grade school which happened a long time ago, I used to play outside with the neighbors' kids and every time I got home, I noticed my big brother watching "some cartoons". Then I asked him "Hey bro, what's the title of that cartoon?" (Kuya, anong title ng cartoon na yan? ) . He replied so fast "It's not cartoons, It's anime" (Di yan cartoons, anime yan). To my curiosity, I watched anime more often, after school and weekends, then I started to have interest and love it.
I remember my first anime, it's Voltes V. I guess.. Aside from anime, Japan's live action sentai shows also started airing in the 90s like Power Rangers, Kamen Rider, Shaider which are translated in Filipino so we can enjoy it online streaming is not yet popular in the 90s.
Some of the awesome anime in my childhood are Voltes V, Daimos, Yu yu Hakusho (Ghost Fighter), Flame of Recca, BTX, Zenki, Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X), Akazukin chacha, Time Quest, Ranma 1/2, Saber Marionette, Magic Knight Rayearth, etc. Japan also have adaptations from novels of Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I really can't enumerate all of the shows because most of them are freakingly amazing.
BIG DIFFERENCE: being a kid and a grown-up
As I discovered some of my fave anime have merchandises, I planned to buy some of it but I am a penniless and helpless kid. I buy cheap and budget-friendly merchandise such as posters, printouts, stickers, bookmarks and keychains. Simple things that makes me happy and my wallet.
Everything changes, so as my allowance haha. I have to upgrade my anime stuff. Now, I am collecting some expensive but heart-contenting merchandises like manga and figures. I also started attending anime conventions.
SOME CRAZY STUFF I DID FOR LOVE
Not in a romantic thingy but my love for anime.
> I extremely want to buy anime merch, so I cutdown my budgets for school food and miscellaneous.
>I walk from school to nearby PUJ stop to lessen my fare.
>I turned down my friends invites to hang out to prevent spending money.
>I attended anime conventions even if I am alone. And I look like a weirdo talking to myself.
>I explore new places for anime merchandise and I'm not scared of being lost. haha
FIRST ANIME CONVENTION
It's really funny that I've been a fan of anime for a long time yet I recently discovered that there were anime conventions being held here in the Philippines. Since anime and cosplay communities are rapidly growing, event organizers are steaming up to have more conventions than usual.
I attended my first anime convention entitled "OZINEFEST" April 2011 that took place in SM megatradehall. I'm with relatives, my niece happens to be an otaku too. Knowing that we have the same interest really made me happpy.
Otuside the event hall, I saw lots of cosplayer hanging out with acquaintances and some of them are having their picture taken with con goers. I have culture shock, I mean it's kinda weird seeing familiar costumes from anime brought to life but I'm back to my senses after a bit of realizations...hahah. The moment we entered the hall I'm like "Oh my, It's like a different world in here" and my eyes got big. For sure, I look like a little girl happily lost in a themepark. Anime merchandises are everywhere from manga, figures, cosplay items, name it..it will surely fulfill every otaku's heart.
AN OTAKU FOR LIFE
Others might say having this kind of passion is very childish but I don't care. I will continue doing this until my hair turns white..haha
Passion for what you love is important, no matter how old or young you are and I am proudly to say....
I AM AN ANIME OTAKU AND WILL ALWAYS BE
